Over the course of ten weeks, fifteen UW-Madison project teams participated in a lean startup workshop focused on connecting their respective technologies to a commercialization path. Designed by the UW-Madison School of Business and D2P staff, the workshop was based upon lean startup principles and the NSF developed I-Corps training program.
The diversity of projects was high, having technologies that included engineering, software, life sciences, biological materials and drug assays. The project teams consisted of faculty, researchers, staff, post-docs, graduate students, undergraduate students, and members of the business community.
A potential measure of success of the process to date is the high percentage of projects on track toward commercialization. While some projects are still working to develop a clear commercialization path, eight of the fifteen are deemed to be on well on their way toward startup formation and two are headed toward licensing arrangements.
